POACHED PEARS

1 c. sugar
3 c. red wine
1 cinnamon stick
4 whole cloves
4 ripe pears, peeled, halved & cored

Place everything (except pears) in large pan. Bring to boil and stir to dissolve the sugar. Add pear halves; lower heat to simmer and cook 10 minutes. Remove pears, cloves and cinnamon. Cook over low heat until liquid becomes thick and syrupy (about 15 minutes). Return pears to pan, cut side down. Cook 5 more minutes, constantly spooning syrup over pears. Serve hot or cold.
